Whitechapel - Into The Mouth Of Hell We Tour (1st Leg)
ARTIST: Whitechapel
ALBUM: This Is Exile
Monday, Sept 28th, 2009 - The first leg of the 'Into The Mouth Of Hell We Tour' North American run hit the Senator Theater in Chico, CA. Fans of the tours direct support band, Tennessee's Extreme Metal Titans known as Whitechapel, made it quite clear who they were there to see on this particular night. From screams and grunts of the band's moniker throughout the night (which became very reminiscent of the all too familiar "SLAYERRRRR!!!" chant that happens at almost every metal show known to man, even when Slayer isn't on the bill...which could bode very well for Whitechapel moving forward), to a show of force in the amount of Whitechapel t-shirts, jerseys, and hoodies that could be seen on just about every other kid attending the show.

Once the band hit the stage, they tore through an unrelenting set of material comprised mostly of tracks from their recent release, 'This Is Exile', but making sure to add a couple of tracks from 'The Somatic Defilement' to the set list as well, much to the delight of their extremely rabid fans. From soon to be classics like Vicer Exciser and Prostatic Fluid Asphyxiation to more recent favorites like Possession, Father Of Lies and their latest album's Title Track, Whitechapel kept the extreme momentum going with nary a break in between each song, bringing their all too brief set to a close with the sonically crushing sounds of Eternal Refuge. And as is the case with any band worth watching, the encore chants began immediately, but due to both time constraints and them not being the tour's Headliner they were unable to fulfill their fans request. All things considered it was a minor disappointment to be had, as their fans walked toward the doors, sweat soaked and shouting "WHITECHAPELLLLL!!" as they went. Sufficiently satisfied.

Something definitely worth noting about the Chico crowd was the virtual non-existence of the dreaded 'hardcore dance' crap that has plagued many a metal show when one band on the bill happens to draw in those types of fans. In this instance, Whitechapel would have been the band to draw in those types of fans, and while there were many present that had that look about them, they were anything but that and they proved that in the pit area during the entirety of Whitechapel's set. Not once was there a need for a 'dance floor', as the fans were moshing and circle pitting from the opening notes of This Is Exile to the final moments of Eternal Refuge. Kudos to the fans for keeping the mosh alive, and kudos to Whitechapel for encouraging the circle pits that went off during their set. All in all, the show was great from top to bottom and went off with no infighting amongst fans, despite the different styles of metal that each band brought to the table. A step in the right direction for the fans, and a positive note for the bands to end the night on.

Whitechapel just hit the road for once again the second leg of the Into The Mouth Of Hell We Tour North American run alongside Trivium, Chimaira, and Dirge Within. For fans that missed the first run or didn't have a show in your area, be sure to check tour dates and make sure you catch Whitechapel on this run as the band will finally be taking a break from the road through the Xmas holiday. They will begin writing and recording their next album in January with producer Jason Suecof, and will not return to the road (at least not here in the U.S.) until Spring of 2010.
