Whitechapel - The March Tour 2008
ARTIST: Whitechapel
ALBUM: This Is Exile
What to say about Whitechapel. Well, because of the fact that they were basically the opener for this specific show (Slim's, San Francisco), due to the venue not allowing 5 band bills and forcing Gwen Stacy to drop off for the night, Whitechapel didn't exactly have much room to move around. And while this is rather typical for an opening band, it didn't really seem to affect Whitechapel's performance, and it made it rather hard to tell if they would be more energetic if they had more room to work with. To their credit, they still got a great crowd response, but a little bit more of a show wouldn't hurt them. Zach is probably the only one besides Phil that seems to get any kind of real movement going. It's cool to headbang and do windmills (if one is capable), but stage presence is a very necessary thing for a good show. And granted every individual out there in a band has their own way of getting into it, but the bigger you get, the more stage you have to run around on...and the one thing that truly kills it for any band is when the headliner has the whole stage and hardly does anything (like Lamb Of God...excepting Randy, who basically IS the show). One of the many things that made Pantera such an amazing live act (aside from just being able to see Dime shred) was the fact that Phil would run and jump all over the place, and Dime wasn't one to stand still either. Not to say that a band can't be exciting if they don't run around the entire time (Chimaira manage to put on a pretty good show with little to no movement at all), but it does make for a better overall performance when you got some kind of stage show going. So here's to hoping that Whitechapel aren't the kind of band that are just gonna stand there and make angry faces at the crowd. It'll be nice to see them hit a larger stage at some point, to see how energetic they might otherwise be.
