LOUDSIDE PHOTOS - MUTINY WITHIN - SOULFLY TOUR 2009

Mutiny Within - Soulfly Tour 2009
ARTIST: Mutiny Within
ALBUM: Mutiny Within
Modern metal upstarts Mutiny Within hit the stage at The Boardwalk in Orangevale, CA seeming a bit unsure of how the crowd was going to react to them. For an extremely young band that has more in common with the likes of Dream Theater and Children Of Bodom than they do with tech goregrinders Cattle Decapitation or the legendary Soulfly, not to mention not even having a legitimate release to speak of, their slightly noticeable level of unease was understandable.

Having been to more shows than I can rightly remember, it's extremely common for the opening band to be completely ignored by the majority of people that are actually present that early. Fortunately for Mutiny Within, this was obviously not going to be the case this time as the venue was filling up fast and the crowd seemed to be in a completely positive and extremely attentitive mood, allowing Mutiny Within to kick off their set with all eyes on them. The band took full advantage of the opportunity, ripping through a set of songs (from their forthcoming self titled album) that no one in the crowd was even remotely familiar with, yet with each song they tore through the crowd became more interested and energized and the response of claps, cheers and whistles became increasingly louder as a result.

Classically trained vocalist Chris Clancy showcased a rather impressive range in both clean and screamed vocal delivery, while dueling guitarists Brandon Jacobs and Dan Bage melted faces with their Petrucci/Laiho-esque brand of maximum melodic shred. Keyboardist Drew Stavola had a couple of spotlight moments showing off a fleet fingered solo or two on the keys, while drummer Bill Fore maintained the foundation with precision execution. The most lively and energetic member of the band however, was bassist Andrew 'AJ' Jacobs. Despite having a key role in maintaining the rhythm section as well as contributing a large amount of backing vocals, AJ was as all over the place as he could be, making it look easy and exhibiting a level of enthusiasm that became infectious as the band moved through their all too brief set.

By the end of their first song, Mutiny Within had managed to get horns up, heads banging and mosh pits going. By the time they brought the set to a close, it was quite clear that they had won over just about every person in the venue. Not exactly the most common occurrence for a relatively unknown band on their first national tour, but definitely a plus for the guys in Mutiny Within.

If you missed them this time around, be sure to catch them when they come back through. They're currently on a very short east coast run alongside Periphery and This or the Apocalypse. Following that, they will take a break for the holidays, but they'll be back out on the road again in January alongside Arsis, Exodus, and Arch Enemy.
