Carcass - Exhumed To Consume II Tour
ARTIST: Carcass
There really is nothing else that can be said about the one and only Carcass that hasn't been said already. The grind core pioneers progressed with each album they released, ultimately creating a style and setting a standard for melodic death metal that wouldn't gain any significant popularity for at least 10 years or more after they had called it a day. Carcass influenced thousands of bands along the way, including an entire sub-genre of death metal based completely on emulating the band to the tee, which is not something many bands can lay claim to, regardless of how 'legendary' they might think themselves to be.
Seeing Carcass live is also something to behold. Having been in the game for 25+ years now, with the last 15 years being off the grid completely, it was amazing to watch Jeff Walker, Bill Steer and Michael Amott flawlessly shred their way through material spanning as far back as 'Symphonies Of Sickness' and 'Reek of Putrefaction', all the way to material from their legendary 'Heartwork' release, and even their aptly titled 'Swansong' album. It's rather unfortunate that original skin-bashing legend Ken Owen was not able to perform with the band on the reunion tours due to suffering a massive brain hemorrhage several years ago. But the fill in Carcass chose, Arch Enemy skinsman Daniel Erlandsson, does the songs complete justice.
As I've seen in recent years with many bands, Carcass decided to take some wicked younger bands on this tour with them, and for this show in particular, there were special guests to contend with as well. Suicide Silence and (special guests) The Faceless are two of the fastest rising bands in extreme metal today, and considering the energy the younger bands put into their performances (moreso with Suicide Silence as The Faceless doesn't move around much), it's no easy feat for older bands to compete, regardless of how many years of experience they have. The other special guest of the night was Death Angel, who are a bit older and from the golden era of Bay Area Thrash, but always give 110% on stage. And while all the bands rounding out the bill put on stellar performances in their own right, none of them were able to compete with the ass-kicking performance that Carcass brought that night. It definitely proves that Carcass put in plenty of work before announcing any reunion tours, to make sure they could take any band on the planet on the road with them and not be outshined in any capacity, which is exactly how it should be.
Some bands out there need to realize that their hour in the spotlight has long past, and they need to hang up the guitars and seriously call it a day. And it's a real pleasure to be able to say without question that Carcass definitely isn't one of them. If anything, Carcass needs to give us one last full length album before they call it a day. Put out a legitimate final album that the band is actually satisfied with and comfortable in calling it their 'Swan Song'. Whether that will happen or not remains to be seen...
