Antagonist’s debut An Envy Of Innocence is a metal album full of the kind of ferocious sounds that haven’t been heard since Pantera’s Vulgar Display of Power. Starting in 1998, when the members were only 14 years old, Antagonist has been churning out hardcore metal for a dedicated fanbase in the Los Angeles underground. Playing garages, skating rinks, and anywhere they could, Antagonist eventually opened up for some of metal’s biggest bands including Suffocation, Caliban, God Forbid and It Dies Today. Antagonist writes truly great songs. The technical playing on An Envy of Innocence does not take away from the songs themselves which are catchy, yet brutal. You feel the spirit of Chuck Schuldiner and Death, while at other times it’s hard to miss the influence of classic Metallica thrash. But unlike most of today’s metal bands Antagonist writes the kinds of catchy hooks and choruses that’ll be permanently carved into your heart! Antagonist is rejuvenating metal. Their passion and love for the music will single handedly bring them the recognition they deserve. An Envy of Innocence is ultimately an album of struggle, perseverance, and heartache.
