Carnifex new album and Victory Records debut, 'The Diseased And The Poisoned', is nothing more than a completely predictable, by the numbers deathcore album. Breakdowns galore, rehashed rhythms, typical pseudo-blasts, blackened rasps and gurgly grunts are nothing to get even the slightest bit excited about.
The now overused 808 bass drops that are all too common within this oversaturated scene are of course present, right alongside numerous guitar squeals, and it goes without saying that this band couldn't tie any of their material together without the consistent use of chugging breakdowns. And the band's aresenal of recycled 90's death metal riffing doesn't do them much good either. What it does manage to do is showcase the band's complete lack of creative ability and song writing skills, and obviously does nothing to help make their already unoriginal and uninspired material even the slightest bit enjoyable to listen to.
A mash up of Obituary meets Black Dahlia Murder meets Emmure is a pretty apt description of what Carnifex brings to the table. |

Bottom Line: Even if this record had come out a few years ago, at the beginning of the Deathcore scene's steady rise in popularity, it still wouldn't come close to contending with some of the better releases of the last few years from the sub-genres most capable units. And it comes as no surprise really that Victory decided to sign the band and release the album, as the label has gone from being a leader in the metallic hardcore movement to becoming a name that is synonymous with following trends. And I guess if you really wanted to look at things from that perspective, then you couldn't possibly have a better release than this.
'The Diseased And The Poisoned' is most definitely an album designed strictly for scene kids and trendwhores. |
