It's a wonder that this band isn't ten times bigger. Maybe with the current state of the music industry, major labels aren't so worried about signing the next big pop-soaked screamo band, because Ice Nine Kills has all the elements necessary to get play on major rock radio stations. They'd also be a perfet fit for tours like Warped, and moreso for Rockstar Taste Of Chaos.
Right in line with the likes of Blessthefall, and every other band that fuses the lighter end of screaming with catchy pop soaked sing alongs and extremely accessible melodic breaks.
The only thing that separates them from the clutter of bands of this ilk is that they do tend to utilize a random death metal growl here and there, and they actually have a rather good command of their respective instruments. There's more going on here than three chord power pop screamo, it just takes a few listens to catch it. Especially if this particular style isn't entirely your preference. |

Bottom Line: There are a couple of bands that have stepped outside the lines and blurred the edges just a bit in the screamo genre. Bringing in occassional death metal growls, and a slightly more discplined level of musicianship is without question the first step in reaching another level of progression for this still new sub-genre that is slow to change.
If even one major label were looking for some sort of evolution in the screamo genre, they'd do well to pay attention to Ice Nine Kills. They've got the ability to take things to another level if they wanted to........all they need is the backing and the attention to make some permanent changes in the sub-genre by influencing the next generation of bands to challenge themselves musically, and continuously step it up. |
