It would appear that Ferret, much like (their almost sister label) Trustkill, is aiming for Victory's trendy screamo crown with the signing of a band such as Gwen Stacy. There are no real amazing or truly negative aspects to releases such as this one here.
For every different sub-genre that is created, there are only so many ways that it can be manipulated and crossed over before oversaturation becomes unavoidable. And it's unfortunate that in a sub-culture where originality used to be revered, it's now more commonplace to just hop on the next available band wagon.
For what it's worth, Gwen Stacy isn't a bad band by any means, nor is the music bad. Their execution of this specific style is better than most. They're easily more aggressive than the majority of bands that live for nothing more than the perfect catchy emo chorus that's sure to win every 13 year old girls heart for the next....until the next eye liner wearing, girl pant band comes along. It's a redeeming quality that saves Gwen Stacy from being lost in the over-sized crowd of third and fourth rate bands that are trying to hop on the wagon while it's burning. |

Bottom Line: If there was at least one band out there that managed to "get it right", Gwen Stacy would be it. 'The Life I Know' contains elements of older Poison The Well mixed in with the styles of Bury Your Dead and even Atreyu before they became a full time rock band.
Gwen Stacy, despite their interesting, not-so-aggressive-sounding band moniker, are definitely not your little sister's screamo. If you can appreciate occassional clean vocals, but prefer the band(s) to have more of the aggressive approach, make sure to pick this one up. |
