The current attempt at "bringing back thrash" still makes no sense whatsoever. This same thing was attempted back in the mid-90's, when Pantera was king, and damn near every band out there was trying to emulate their sound and style.
Along came a plethora of bands that felt that "thrash" needed a revival, and it became the first "retro-thrash" movement. The difference between that movement and this one, is that the first one was brought on by a bunch of older thrashers trying to relive glory days gone by. The current one is being brought about by numerous bands with members who either aren't old enough to remember the golden era of thrash, or weren't even born in that era.
Warbringer is one of these bands, trying to "bring back" a style that never left. With their mangy long hair, high top shoes, and 1986 guitar tones, "War Withouth End" does nothing but bring to mind shitty 80's rehash thrash similar to Slayer and Kreator, with a bit of Exodus and old school Metallica thrown in for good measure.
There's nothing even remotely "new" to this album, or this style of thrash. And despite the fact that most don't care for the term "Retro", that's exactly what it is. Thrash is alive and well, and always has been. It's simply evolved, as is necessary for music to avoid becoming stale. Hopefully, sooner than later, these kids will figure that out. |

Bottom Line: If you want to hear some genuine "Thrash" from those who were there to help create it, and are still making kick ass MODERN thrash, look no further than Megadeth, Machine Head, or Testament for proof. Thrash hasn't gone anywhere, and most certainly hasn't been forgotten about.
Warbringer, and all of their peers (Evile, Fueled By Fire, Bonded By Blood) need to realize their "cause" is a rather pointless one. The only difference between Warbringer and a band like Slayer, is the fact that these kids are more accomplished in their guitar work (especially their leads) than Kerry King will ever be. Outside of that, all they're doing is paying homage to a severely overrated band that should have called it a day after they made the same album twice.
Bring on the thrash.......but leave the 1986 guitar tones at home. Bring a modern sound to the table, and show us what you got. Maybe then you'll actually be taken seriously. |
