While this is a slightly older release, it struck me as one that may have been considerably overlooked with the shitload of bands putting out half assed records within the past year.

Khann is rather hard to pinpoint. It's not deathcore, though at times it comes close just based on sheer brutality. There's alot more to this band than "brootal" breakdowns and death metal grunts. A similarity to Dillinger Escape Plan lies in their extremely random chaotic arrangements. More along the lines of Noisecore, although that now seems to be an almost non-existent subgenre. But then, with the hordes of pre-teens and teens that seem to be getting into more extreme music these days, it's no surprise that the names of certain subgenres disappear, and new ones randomly appear to take their place.

Lyrically, there seems to be a more socially conscious thread, hence the album being titled "Tofutopia". Definitely open to interpretation, though I'm quite certain the songs have specific meaning to the band. Musically, this album is an amalgamation of styles, ranging from the previously mentioned noisecore, to having elements of grind, crust, sludge, and even some stoner-esque melodic passages, and is definitely not for the closed minded or elitist metalheads.

Bottom Line:

Khann have made an interesting statement of sorts with their first release. Tofutopia is comprised of layers of different extreme styles. There are moments of Between The Buried And Me, and the next moment, the band sounds like a tribute to EyeHateGod or Dillinger Escape Plan. The only thing that takes away from this album is the raw production level. But then, some people might actually dig that it's not completely polished.

If you consider yourself to be a more open minded metalhead, and you dig the likes of The Red Chord, BTBAM, and even Dillinger, you should definitely check this album out.
