To the somewhat inexperienced listener, such as this writer here, this latest album from Boston's own Dropkick Murphys sounds alot like older better Rancid, only with their signature brand of irish/celtic influence added to the mix.

A good portion of the time, the vocals sound uncannily like Tim and Lars several years ago, when Lars first joined Rancid. The use of instruments like the banjo, bagpipes, and accordion definitely add a different dimension to the music though. It's a more "fun" version of what punk rock is to your average metalhead. And chances are, the use of those instruments will put off any typical elitist metalhead from even listening to something like DKM.

Another interesting thing about this album in particluar, is in the contrast between the more upbeat music contained herein, and the more serious, and at times depressing lyrical content. Though the messages about friends, family, loyalty, and remembering where you came from always make for some of the absolute best songs a band could write. No matter how you slice it, there's always going to be someone who can relate, or can interpret the lyrical content to fit their life to a tee. Unlike meaningless lyrical drivel less capable bands spew forth, DKM put forth some really good (and most times anthemic) sing along lyrical content.

Bottom Line:

The album title, 'The Meanest Of Times', is for the most part, completely on point with the lyrical content. In alot of ways, it's about dealing with life and the hard times that can bring about. On the flipside, it's also about the importance of true friends and Family. It's the type of lyrical content you just can't possibly go wrong with. And having solid catchy song-writing doesn't hurt things either......

With all the elements that Dropkick Murphys incorporate into their own brand of irish/celtic punk rock, this album wouldn't be what it is without the lyrics. That's what makes 'The Meanest Of Times' the album that it is. This is recommended listening.....you won't be disappointed!
