On Parkway Drive's debut release, "Killing With A Smile", they were Australia's perfect answer to American metalcore, with their sound being equal parts Unearth and Bleeding Through. Unlike the bulk of overseas bands, they had truly nailed the sound, breakdowns and all.

This time around, with their sophomore release on Epitaph Records, entitled "Horizons", Parkway Drive seem to be focusing more on following in the footsteps of All That Remains, with more of a thrash orientation. Adding to that, they've also incorporated more melody into their sound as well as heavier doses of brutality. The vocals, courtesy of Winston McCall, are more aggressive. This includes layered deathcore vocals that show up throughout the album, adding an extra dose of extremity to their already crushing sound.

The Musicianship has also been stepped up, with more complex guitarwork, and some wicked melodic leads as well. All in all, "Horizons" is one hell of a metal upgrade from the bands previous effort.

Bottom Line:

In regards to all things extreme, "Horizons" contains elements of Deathcore, Black Metal, Thrash, and Swedish Melodic Death Metal all rolled into one kick ass package. It's safe to say that with this release, Parkway Drive have most definitely expanded their musical Horizons.

Fans of All That Remains, Unearth, As I Lay Dying, and Heaven Shall Burn would do well in checking this one out.
