After checking out this album from start to finish, it's a wonder why everyone is making such a fuss about Suicide Silence, yet most are completely unaware of Bring Me The Horizon. Chances are, Bring Me The Horizon are being snubbed simply because they LOOK like they belong on a tour with the likes of Escape The Fate or some other emo-core band. And if that is the case, it's rather unfortunate, because 'Count Your Blessings' is one of the year's best Deathcore releases, period.
Technical guitarwork is everpresent, and the breakdowns are as heavy as heavy gets. Time changes are also par for the course on 'Count Your Blessings', and the range of vocals is equal to that of any of the current 'top tier' Deathcore bands, from the most guttural of death growls to acidic black metal screams. Gang vocals are thrown in here and there as well, which adds another dynamic to the songs.
It's not all about mind numbing brutality though. Bring Me The Horizon, possibly taking a cue from All Shall Perish, have also added a decent amount of swedish melodic death influenced guitar melodies to their own brand of ultra brutality. And that doesn't include the wicked lead guitar work present on 'Count Your Blessings'. The acoustic reprieve 9 tracks in is a welcome reprieve from the onslaught of aggression that makes up the rest of the album.
Perhaps the best thing about 'Count Your Blessings' are the song titles, which show that the band aren't all about the "tough guy" approach with the "Metal 24/7" attitude. They don't take themselves too seriously, and are obviously having fun making some kick ass metal at the same time. |

Bottom Line: It really is a sorry state of affairs in metal when one band is ignored solely based on their appearance, while another is praised solely because......well, who the hell knows why really.
The exact same thing happened to The Black Dahlia Murder a few years back when elitists felt that the band "shouldn't" play such an extreme form of metal simply because no one in the band had long hair, and their vocalist wore glasses. The only logical response to such an absurd statement is "WTF?!?!"
Bring Me The Horizon, regardless of what they might look or dress like, have put out an extremely relevant, kick ass METAL album. Fans of The Black Dahlia Murder, All Shall Perish, and At The Throne Of Judgment would do well in checking these guys out. |
