'Orchestra Of Wolves', the Epitaph debut for UK punks Gallows has a number of varied styles to it that are pretty consistent throughout the entirety of the album. The backbone of their sound is unquestionable 100% pure punk rock, but the band's willingness to incorporate more than just the obligatory, predictable three chord progressions is what makes Gallows stand out.
The album kicks off with "Kill The Rhythm", which has a total Every Time I Die vibe to it. There's that old school hardcore feel, with a straight up rock n' roll riff running through. The dual vocal delivery also gives it a more modern feel. A few tracks in, "Abandon Ship" once again fuses the old school hardcore style with rock n roll sensibility. The track is made even more infectious with an almost pop punk oriented sing along chorus.
Halfway through the album is an interesting track entitled "Last Fight For the Leaving Dead", which is a rather brooding instrumental track that's just short of a minute long. This leads right into "Just Because You Sleep Next To Me Doesn't Mean You're Safe". (How's that for a comical but thought provoking title?) The track itself has Evergreen Terrace written all over it, only less melodic, but the breakdown is everpresent.
The bulk of the album is made up of the same old school hardcore punk foundation, with elements of modern hardcore, metalcore, and even some noisecore, all fleshed out with a dose of straight up rock and roll. |

Bottom Line: 'Orchestra Of Wolves' is an extremely interesting listen, to say the least. The band definitely has that snotty UK punk sound, but musically they definitely push the boundaries to the point where it begs the comparison of what punk is/was versus what punk could be. If you took Every Time I Die and Evergreen Terrace, and threw in just a bit of The Dillinger Escape Plan's quirkiness for good measure, and you mixed it all together with a huge dose of rock 'n' roll and laid it all on a punk rock foundation, Gallows is what you'd end up with. And while this may not pass for "pure punk rock" to the punk rock purists, there is no question that "Orchestra Of Wolves" is most definitely Punk As Fuck! Period! |
