Despised Icon's latest offering, 'The Ills of Modern Man' is nothing more than another slab of what we've come to expect from these guys. Dual and triple vocal layer attacks, metalcore breakdowns, pinch harmonics, and lots of pig squeals, this is without question signature Despised Icon.

The problem with this album being what it is, lies in the fact that this album isn't exactly offering up anything new. Since the release of 'The Healing Process', we have had extremely stellar releases from the likes of All Shall Perish, Through The Eyes of the Dead, and The Red Chord (all of which are bands that Despised Icon will soon be on tour with), and after hearing what the aforementions bands had to offer musically,  'The Ills Of Modern Man' is somewhat of a disappointment.

Though they may have raised the bar in the realms of deathcore with the release of 'The Healing Process', it seems that Despised Icon have opted to take the same route that Killswitch Engage did in playing it safe and utilizing the same formula that they used on their previous album.

There really is nothing new to be found on 'The Ills of Modern Man'. Though the album is not a total loss for the band, it's simply a matter of them not putting in the creative effort to create the album they are more than capable of churning out.

Bottom Line:

Despised Icon has the recognition of being the band that raised the bar for deathcore bands with the musical skill and brutality showcased on their magnum opus and Century Media debut, 'The Healing Process'.  And based on that, one would expect that a band with that much skill amongst them would continuously improve, and maintain that level of excellence and push things further with each release. Instead, what we have here is nothing more than a continuation of the last album.

So here's to hoping that with their next release, Despised Icon can get things back in gear, and put together the album that they are obviously capable of putting out. In the meantime, 'The Ills of Modern Man' will at least provide diehard fans with something that should easily satisfy them.
