Static-X have returned with 'Cannibal', their fifth album overall. Having the distinction of having had all their albums released on the same label, and a major label at that is somewhat of an achievement for a band like Static-X.
While the album may at first seem like the same old rehash, a closer listen reveals that Wayne Static and co. are not lost on the current direction of Metal. The album's lead off track has some decent lead guitar work showing up toward the end. Likewise, "No Submission" and numerous other tracks also feature some unexpected, above average lead guitarwork. Similiarly, with metal going through another "extreme" makeover recently, the clean vocals Wayne decided to showcase on 2004's 'Shadow Zone' have all but disappeared. Another interesting sidenote is that this album does not contain a single song with the word "Otsego" in the title. Maybe Wayne finally got over it. Whatever "It" may have been.

Bottom Line: With 'Cannibal', Wayne and co. seem to have finally found their focus. With a number of bands putting out albums that are being hailed as "returns to form", Static-X should be included in that, as 'Cannibal' is closer to 'Wisconsin Death Trip' than 'Shadow Zone' or the failure that was 'Start A War'. And while they may never come close to topping their magnum opus 'Machine', Static-X have finally taken a step in the right direction in making the album they wanted to make, despite any current trends in any current scene.
If you're looking for that semi-aggressive Ministry/Fear Factory-esque techno-industrial sound and style hat Static-X had prior to 'Shadow Zone', pick this one up. You won't be disappointed. |
