This Moment's latest offering, 'Star Parallel', might have been considered a great album had it been released 3 years ago, when metalcore was at it's peak. Unfortunately, with a 3 year lag, and the metalcore sub-genre having been oversaturated with tons of waste in the form of bands trying to hop on a bandwagon completely engulfed in flames, 'Star Parallel' isn't going to do much in terms of taking this band to the next level.
There is literally nothing on this album that can even be considered remotely original. Even an attempt at stepping outside the confines of metalcore would have been a step in the right direction. Taking cues from bands that stepped away from the "Nu Metal" sound when it was dying would have been the best bet for This Moment, in regards to their putting out an album that is nothing more than "metalcore-by-numbers."
The here and there addition of Death Metal grunts, and the occassional black metal scream does little to help the band get out of the hole they managed to dig themselves into with 'Star Parallels'. |

Bottom Line: With genre leaders Killswitch Engage putting out the utterly unimaginative 'As Daylight Dies', and Shadows Fall not far behind in releasing their latest turd 'Threads of Life', any and EVERY band that has been lumped into (or chose to fall into) the metalcore scene should take note, and look elsewhere for ideas and direction.
This Moment would do themselves a huge favor in taking notes, and in doing everything they possibly can to separate themselves from a quickly dying sub-genre. Better to sit on the sidelines and watch metalcore burn itself to the ground, than to go down with it..... |
