Here we go with christian noisecore band The Chariot. With vocalist Josh Scogin (ex-Norma Jean) being the only original member left, you would think that the music might change in some form or fashion, or not sound so alike that of his previous band. And while there may be some different elements to The Chariot musically, coupled with the fact that they're not entirely as chaotic as Norma Jean, the overall sound still isn't far removed from them.
For what it's worth, this album isn't exactly "bad". Despite numerous time changes, the band does have a handle on things, with a more controlled form of musical chaos. Less like Dillinger Escape Plan, and more like Remembering Never on their "Women and Children...." album.
All things considered, the worst thing about this album is the lyrical content. It's one thing to make subtle references to one's beliefs or write in a style that leaves the lyrics somewhat open to personal interpretation, but to come off as utterly preachy as The Chariot does will easily be the biggest turn off for a good amount of people that might have otherwise given them a listen or ten. |

Bottom Line: The Chariot have that one singular element that will ultimately win select people over, while completely driving others away from the band. That being the overt christian lyrical content. Some see this as nothing more than minor discrepancy and pay more attention to the actual music and what it does for them, than the lyrical content being spouted by Scogin. Others consider anything related to christianity to be the antithesis of extreme music (in all it's forms), and would never even consider listening to or giving their money to a band that espouses christianity.
At the end of the day, opinions remain just that, and the only thing that matters is the music. And in this instance, The Chariot, at the very least, has released an album that is easily one of the better noisecore releases to come out in recent years. |
