When I first heard of Mortiis, the band was still a solo project, a dark ambient experiment led by a weirdo wearing a troll’s mask. I was told the music was unique, and worth listening. When I saw the cover of The Stargate, which was, at the time, his latest album, I thought it was a joke. I mean the guy was portrayed as a dark Batman flying in the sky, with a skull-shaped codpiece and a white aura all around him. I thought, this is so cheap and cliché. But one day, Mortiis released The Smell of Rain. It was quite a revelation for me, not in terms of what his music sounded like, but it was more about the art that lies around the album. First, the name of the album, The Smell of Rain, perfect. The smell of rain is something we all know and naturally appreciate, and it conveys an inherent poetic impression. The album cover itself is wonderful. It depicts Mortiis as a primitive being, with his legs wrapped in white bands, crouched in a rocky arid desert, observing a dried plant resting in his hands. I thought this was the perfect artwork, and I started considering that Mortiis might just as well be worth the try. Now, The Smell of Rain was also a musical change for Mortiis. This album is more of an industrial electro-rock album, and this is what Mortiis became. His next album, The Grudge, confirmed his new industrial music choice. Now, Some Kind Of Heroin is a remix album of songs from The Grudge. I never liked the idea of remixing albums, but again, Mortiis has helped me changed my mind. I feel like all the tracks on this album are good, and the songs are remixed in different styles, which gives a sense of diversity to this album. The songs range from EMB to electro and progressive trance. EBM might be the dominant style though, and it seems natural as EBM (Electronic Body Music) is sort of a mix between electropunk and industrial music; in very basic terms, heavy electronic music. The result is a very danceable music, and is perfectly suited for dance floor purposes. |

Bottom Line: Mortiis should have released Some Kind Of Heroin on an electronic music label. I am not saying it’s bad, on the contrary, I believe that it’s an excellent remix album. But I don’t think that the metal world will feel the same about it. |
