The guys from Maserati define themselves as a dynamic post-psychedelic orgy of hooks molesting the tired cliche of math-prog (oh and they do say "fuck vocals", yes they're instrumental). Fair enough, it’s been four years since their last release, and it is said that their sound has changed, worth the listening.

The album starts off with clean muted guitar arpeggios, that sound like some kind of space movie soundtrack. Epic distorted guitar chords are thrown in from time to time, reminding me of a French New Age band called Era. The music gets deeper towards the end of the track, there’s more bass, and the drums kick in with quite danceable groovy rhythms. The track eventually gets boring towards the end, being a bit too long. The next song, 12/16, is in my opinion the best song of the album. It starts quietly with one of these cool intros bands like Pink Floyd or Camel would have used. Then comes in a very inspired clean guitar riff, soon joined by slow heavy distorted chords that sound a lot like Agalloch’s work. The music grows deeper and deeper until it reaches its post-hardcore explosion, with not waves, but literally walls of guitars filling the air. After a short soothing interlude comes the deception. This is where I started feeling that the drums were way too groovy to be post-rock or post-hardcore. Maserati  doesn’t want to fit in a single category. Fair enough, but I don’t feel like this is working really. I mean, it is, but it’s not that enchanting. While the guitars cruise into epic riffs, the bass sounds quite basic and sadly is disconnected from the rest of the music. The next track, This Is a Sight We Had One Day From the High Mountains is more of a sludgy psychedelic stoner rock. It is slow and heavy, in the Southern tradition. Show Me The Season starts out as if it were some kind of James Bond theme. Again, it feels like the drumming is way too active and fast for the rest of the music. It gives a sense of instability to the songwriting, and just as the drumming and the guitars finally come together in harmony, the bass goes disconnected.

Bottom Line:

Towards, the end I felt like I didn’t want to listen to the rest of the album. I did of course, it’s not that the album is boring, but it tends to be frustrating. The music starts creating an interesting atmosphere, but only half of it. There always remains something disconnected. However, Maserati's music remains interesting and it is worth giving it a try.
