It appears as if most metal bands reap a great benefit whenever a line up change occurs. And while there are exceptions to every rule (Every Time I Die?), Ion Dissonance has fortunately benefitted from a recent line up change.
New vocalist Kevin McCaughey brings a more Hardcore bark to the table, which fits the music better. And though spoken word breaks have been overdone (and are now par for the course for every melodic metalcore band out there), when Kevin does start in with spoken word interludes, the sheer brutality of the music keeps things interesting as it has a darker, almost apocalyptic feel to it.
Musically, the band is still as extreme as they've ever been, only this time around, there's more of a solid foundation to their sonic assault than in the past. And while there are moments throughout the album where the band does fall back into Dillinger styled chaos, the majority of the material has more in common with Meshuggah's style of controlled chaos, and full on lock-step precision. They've also pretty much stayed away from "breakdowns" and dual-core vocals that are rather typical of bands this extreme. Doing so was a good decision, as it's another way for them to set themselves apart from the others. |

Bottom Line: With Dillinger Esc. Plan being out of the picture lately, and ultimately having less and less of an influence on the majority of young bands that came out during their reign of the Chaoticore/Spasticore/Noisecore scene, some bands have left those elements behind in favor of a more structured style. Ion Dissonance happens to be one of those bands. And with a new vocalist and an absolutely crushing new album, Ion Dissonance are set to carve out their own path this time around. |
