Broadcasting is Comeback Kid’s third album, the first album with guitarist Andrew Neufeld doing the lead vocals. Ironically, the main difference between Broadcasting and Comeback Kid’s previous efforts isn’t the vocals. The vocals are pretty much the same as before: they  sound like angry singing, with some more raspy parts and some nearly crying parts. The instruments, however, have taken a slightly different direction.

Comeback Kid have been considered as a figure in the old school hardcore scene lately. The album’s first tracks confirm this idea: aggressive punk beats and guitars, angry vocals, sing-along gang choruses, some breakdowns and more melodic parts. However, some might find their music is including more emo-ish/emocore elements. Melodic parts are more present than before. The melodies being traditional punk melodies, some might find the guitars too close to The Offspring, Ignite, etc...  Some parts also have a more metal edge and sound more like new school hardcore.

The songs in Broadcasting aren’t long, but they are made up of many different parts. The songs’ structure is more complex than before. While some might feel like it’s too messy and confused, I believe it adds some dynamism to a genre that often suffers from linearity.

Bottom Line:

Comeback Kid have changed. They might disappoint the most old school core guys, but the band has really been exploring a wider variety of hardcore elements and has broadened its Broadcasting. One thing is sure though, Comeback Kid have left their mark on the modern old school hardcore scene.
