If you were to take everything that was great about metalcore and put it all on one album, Bloodjinn's latest release 'This Machine Runs On Empty' would be what you'd undoubtedly end up with.

From the opening riffs of "In The First Degree" to acoustic melodic outro that closes out the album, 'This Machine Runs On Empty' never lets up, and never drags, and the energy level is in direct contradiction to the title. From another point of view however, the album title is extremely fitting given the current state of all things metalcore. With recent highly commercialized mediocre releases from those that are considered to be the genres frontrunners, Bloodjinn are here to show the "heavyhitters" exactly what metalcore should sound like.

'This Machine Runs On Empty' is everything that 'The End Of Heartache' should have and very well could have been. What puts this head and shoulders above the aforementioned album though, is the fact that guitar leads are not shunned. Instead (in the vein of Unearth) they are utilized throughout the album. Beautiful melodic passages, breakdowns, and even a gang chorus or two are present, and vocally there are times when Joel Collins bears an uncanny resemblance to Jesse Leach, without sounding forced.

Despite being a relatively young band, Bloodjinn are obviously not going to allow themselves to drown in a sea of nameless, faceless second generation bands, who are all vying for that torch that is in dire need of being passed on.

Bottom Line:

'This Machine Runs On Empty' is without a doubt one of the best metalcore records to be released since the genre became larger than anyone ever intended or expected it to become. Incorporating styles from the likes of Unearth, Shadows Fall, Killswitch Engage, and even Chimaira, Bloodjinn have released an album that could very well have been the follow up to the genre defining 'Alive Or Just Breathing'.

'This Machine Runs On Empty' is a much needed kick in the ass for the metalcore scene. With some bands trying to break away into more thrash oriented territory, and the other half content to rest on past glories, Bloodjinn are here to claim the throne. Rest assured,  this machine won't be running on empty for long.
