With a name like Alabama Thunderpussy, I would have thought the band to be much more into a southern stoner sound than it actually is. But the album cover art is a pure war heavy metal cover, made by Ken Kelly, who also does Manowar artworks. Manowar... it would then be safe to say that Open Fire will be an album full of heavy metal clichés. Heavy metal is a style that is done, redone and overdone. Still, Alabama Thunderpussy being some kind of reference, I tried to listen to their latest album as if I didn’t know that the epic heavy metal was saturated.

Big groovy riffs, a few melodies, classic catchy solos, epic vocals with a stoner touch, it reminds of both Manowar and Grave Digger. Some guitar riffs have more of a southern accent though. It all reminds me of... the saturated epic heavy metal scene indeed! There’s nothing to say really, Open Fire is a cliché album made by heavy metal veterans.

Bottom Line:

Open Fire is a perfect album for true fans of the genre. It is a good epic heavy metal album, perfectly recorded. But if you’re not one of these fans, you won’t discover anything new, and you’ll find Alabama Thunderpussy to be too heavy for you!
