After nearly falling apart while touring in support of their last album, Belgium's kings of all things deathgrind, Aborted have returned with a revamped line up, and an album that literally crushes everything before it. 'Slaughter and Apparatus: A Methodical Overture' is without question of the most brilliant extreme metal albums to ever be released. Period!

"The Chondrin Enigma" kicks off the album with some truly mindblowing inhuman drumwork (courtesy of Psycroptic drummer David Haley), that leads right into some of the sickest riffing and triple layered blackened death vocals ever. And the grooves.....there are very few bands, if any, that can groove as hard as Aborted does, then go right back into break-neck blast beats and savage riffing.

The album's title track, "A Methodical Overture" (as well as the track "Odious Emanation") contains a guest vocal appearance from one of the pioneers of both the death and grind genres, the legendary Jeff Walker (Ex- Carcass). With the amount of influence that Carcass obviously had on Aborted, Jeff agreeing to appear on the album may as well signify a "passing of the torch". Hateshpere's Jacob Bredahl also makes a guest appearance on "Avenious", which contains the most wicked sounding chorus ever laid down. The leadwork on "Avenious" is stellar, and the song itself, death metal vocals notwithstanding, is an all out thrash assault. Slightly set apart from the rest of the musical makeup found on the album, but no less extreme.

The lyrical content on this album also finds the band stepping outside of what might have been expected of them. No longer does the entire album consist specifically of gore-soaked lyrical content. While there are still some tracks with titles that include enough medical terminology to make Carcass proud, they have branched out on a few of the songs, covering topics that are not too far outside the lines of their overall scope, but enough to break the mold, and to keep from being stuck in a certain category. Furthering that is the cover of the Faith No More classic, "Surprise! You're Dead!". And while there have already been a few metal bands that have covered this specific FNM song, Aborted's take on it is still a more than welcome addition.

With the release of 'Slaughter and Apparatus: A Methodical Overture', Aborted has obliterated any competition they might have previously had. This album is extreme sonic perfection. The musicianship is beyond stellar. Vocal range is impressive and rather intelligible as well, which is ultimately a rarity from a band this extreme. Most bands try to emulate Cannibal Corpse and Suffocation with the unintelligible guttural bellows and growls those bands are known for. Fortunately, Aborted isn't one of those bands.

'Slaughter and Apparatus' is sure to make Carcass-worship bands like General Surgery, Impaled, and Exhumed think twice about where they stand, in comparison to Aborted. With elements of black metal, death, thrash, and gore, along with some mean ass Pantera-esque grooves, Aborted have managed to incorporate all the elements necessary to produce an instant metal classic. And with 'Slaughter and Apparatus: A Methodical Overture', that's exactly what they've done.
