"What is it that you were praying for in there, sir?"
- Loudside @ THE X-FILES: I WANT TO BELIEVE

Upon the initial announcement of THE X-FILES: I WANT TO BELIEVE the pseudo sequel to the 1998 film which in a more realistic view is really just a film that utilizes some of the key X-FILES characters and has no real connection to the original film other than Fox Mulder (David Duchovny), Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) and Walter Skinner (Mitch Pileggi) being a part of the storyline (and in all reality none of them are really at all integral to the storyline).    I was excited to be able to share the news with my wife whom is probably one of the biggest die hard X-FILES fan I had ever come across.  From the second it got a release date we marked it on our calendar and faithfully awaited that day as any fan would.

As the time for release grew near and no more info on the film was released beyond the faux werewolf pictures online, a very vague trailer and the information that Amanda Peet and rapper/Pimp My Ride host Xzibit both had been cast as FBI Agents… we tried our best to ignore that last little tidbit of info.  Then release week came during a midst of craze revolving around THE DARK KNIGHT and the reviews for THE X-FILES: I WANT TO BELIEVE were nowhere near kind.  Though being one that knows there are plenty of films that are critically abhorred that I still enjoyed, I went into the theater release weekend with an open mind looking to at least enjoy another Mulder/Scully adventure.

Good news is, I definitely got another Mulder/Scully adventure, bad news is they kind of showed me why I don’t want another one, and by “kind of” I mean “definitely”.  The film is just flat from the get go and even as they re-introduce us to Mulder and Scully as well as the new FBI agents and Father Joseph Crissman (played by Billy Connolly) and all I remember thinking to myself was, “didn’t they do this already??  And better?”, and as the film progressed “did they think this was a good script for a movie or were they just looking to release anything?” and as the film ended “wow, it’s over and I couldn’t be more indifferent.”

Bottom Line: And that is where it left me and that is why this film ultimately depresses me.  I’ll let you in on a little something about M@, he hates indifference, I don’t like to ride the middle, I like to make my own decisions and opinions and let them be known.  I am the one guy people will go to if they want an honest opinion, I am not afraid to tell you something is terrible even if everyone else loves it and same goes for adoration of things others hate.  I will almost never walk away from something feeling nothing, it is almost always a positive or negative feeling.  Yet as I walked out of the THE X-FILES: I WANT TO BELIEVE I was consumed by indifference, I just didn’t care either way and as a fan of the series whom owns all 9 seasons on DVD and two versions of the first film on DVD, I think this reaction stands as the biggest X-File of all, maybe Chris Carter and crew can return for THE X-FILES: TIME F*** OVER OUR FANS AGAIN and put us fans out of our misery once and for all.
