| SYNOPSIS |
Rose Tyler, a young shop assistant in a London department store, lives a humdrum and profoundly average life - until the night the shop dummies where she works wake up and try to kill her. Her life is saved by a strange man who only calls himself The Doctor, and intrigued by him, she finds herself thrown headlong into a hectic battle to stop an alien presence from invading Earth and annihilating the human race. She comes to learn that her new friend is even stranger than she thought - in fact, the Doctor's an alien adventurer called a 'Time Lord', seemingly the last of his race, who travels through time and space in his TARDIS battling evil where he finds it. And if she travels with him, she'll find herself witnessing the heat-death of the Earth five billion years in the future, meeting Charles Dickens in the past, and encountering lifeforms and invaders stranger than she'd ever thought possible. Only one thing is certain - it'll be the ride of a lifetime...

For the most part the original DOCTOR WHO series from the 60's, 70's and 80's has only been given creedence as an obscure pop culture joke or a MSTK3000 episode. Now the true sci-fi geeks can rejoice as this once ridiculed series was given a bright and brought up to the 21st Century new look in 2005. Starring CHRISTOPHER ECCLEST0N as the infamous space traveler only known as THE DOCTOR and BILLIE PIPER as his ever ready to go sidekick ROSE, DOCTOR WHO The Complete First Series has what fans of the it's former desire and something for those who know nothing of it's prior.
For me personally I have never been a fan of the original series, nor a fan of RED DWARF or any such British sci-fi shows. Actually I am just not really a fan of British television (it all looks like it was filmed with cameras used to do 80's porno flicks if you ask me), so as I set forth to watch an entire series (season?) of this BBC TV show I was sure I would be torn asunder by such annoyances. Much to my surprise (and much unlike the BBC releases of THE OFFICE) DOCTOR WHO was relatively clean of such low technological bothers. With that I was sure the next shoe to fall would be the overly cheesy visual effects I remebered oh so vividly from my late nights watching PBS, and well yeah they are there. BUT, it fits the show I must say, if the show were to have gone to over the top it just wouldn't have the DOCTOR WHO-esque feeling to it, and would probably just end up being BABYLON 5 and a half.
The show begins much like HITCHHIKERS GUIDE TO THE GALAXY as a young woman named ROSE is whisked away from earth by a mysterious extraterrestrial, and then turns a little more BILL & TED'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE as they both enter his space craft which is seemingly a phone booth. That's about where all the current pop culture film analogies end as DOCTOR WHO takes off on it's own originality as THE DOCTOR and ROSE not only through out the univers but through out time and dimensions as well.
Filled with lots of creative costume and set designs, and some pretty decent visual effects (the whole time travel is a bit cheesy at times), DOCTOR WHO definitely deserves it's space on the sci-fi shelf with STAR TREK, BABYLON 5, FIREFLY, BATTLESTAR GALATICA etc., and would be a worthy addition to any sci-fi geeks collection!
