Colonel Jack O’Neill (Anderson) resurfaces from retirement when acorrupt being passes through the Stargate to Earth and kidnaps a femalesoldier.  Stargate, discovered in Egypt at the turn of the 20thcentury, is a portal that immediately carries travelers across vastdistances to other galaxies.  The reactivation of Stargateunleashes O’Neill’s silence about the truth – O’Neill never destroyedStargate as he was ordered to years before and scientist Dr. DanielJackson (Shanks) is alive and well on the far-away planet ofAbydos.  When Colonel O’Neill passes through the Stargate toPlanet Abydos to rescue the lost soldier once again, he is reunitedwith Dr. Jackson who then confesses that the evil being also kidnappedhis wife and brother-in-law. Jackson then unveils his new discovery -an ancient map of hieroglyphics indicating other existing Stargatesthat lead to other planets throughout the galaxy, not only PlanetAbydos. 

O’Neill returns to Earth to inform his superiorGeneral George Hammond (Davis) about the advancement of Stargate as aportal to many unknown frontiers.  Hammond sends newly assembledSG teams to travel throughout the galaxy to conduct research and fightconflict and dark power threatening the safety of Earth and otherpeaceful planets.  This team, known as SG-1, works under theauspices of a covert agency known as the SGC, a division of Air ForceIntelligence that is highly classified; only the President and theJoint Chiefs know of its existence.  Jackson’s discovery and theSG team’s subsequent missions “unlock the universe” and the adventuresof Colonel O’Neill, and Stargate SG-1 begins.
