SYNOPSIS
Hurtling down the track, careening around, over and through the competition, Speed Racer is a natural behind the wheel. Born to race cars, Speed is aggressive, instinctive and, most of all, fearless. His only real competition is the memory of the brother he idolized-the legendary Rex Racer - whose death in a race has left behind a legacy that Speed is driven to fulfill. Speed is loyal to the family racing business, led by his father, Pops Racer, the designer of Speed's thundering Mach 5. When Speed turns down a lucrative and tempting offer from Royalton Industries, he not only infuriates the company's maniacal owner but uncovers a terrible secret-some of the biggest races are being fixed by a handful of ruthless moguls who manipulate the top drivers to boost profits. If Speed won't drive for Royalton, Royalton will see to it that the Mach 5 never crosses another finish line. The only way for Speed to save his family's business and the sport he loves is to beat Royalton at his own game. With the support of his family and his loyal girlfriend, Trixie, Speed teams with his one-time rival-the mysterious Racer X - to win the race that had taken his brother's life: the death-defying, cross-country rally known as The Crucible.

Wow!  I am not going to lie at all on this one.  Upon the first trailers put out for SPEED RACER I couldn't believe that a studio actually was putting the film out, and in wide release none the less.  Then when the film came out and was almost totally ignored by the masses I figured maybe this was the hidden gem of the summer.  It has happened for me plenty of times on films that critics abhor I completely adore.

So upon SPEED RACER's DVD release I decided I would give it an open shot to wow and impress me.  Not only did I try my utmost to like this film, I watched it twice to make sure the first time I watched it I wasn't being lead by preconceived notions.  Alas upon second viewing it was the same and I am somewhat saddened to report to you that this film visuals and all is about as bad as they come.  It feels like a mix of all the bad live action cartoon remakes of the past compacted with over the top CG effects that never once let up enough for you to not know that everything you are watching is over stylized and missing any characters or storylines that would draw one into the picture.  Basically as I watched the film it felt like the WACHOWSKI's were trying to paint people out of there movie.  It's almost like they wanted to make a 100 million dollar movie just for themselves, which is never a good idea for a filmmaker unless they plan on paying to see their own movie 10 million times so the studio can break even.

I don't know but after watching this film twice the only thing I can say I enjoyed was looking at CHRISTINA RICCI who looked absolutely gorgeous as TRIXIE and with that I was kind of upset she wasn't in the film more.
Features:
Bottom Line: I don't know I guess if you really want to see this rent it or something but I wouldn't go dropping your hard earned money on it though if I were you.
