Back in 2004 the world of ADULT SWIM was inundated with a new type of tongue in cheek retro-cartoon much different from the likes of its usual spliced footage with new voice over counterparts (you know what shows I am talking about). This new show of course was none other than THE VENTURE BROS series, which has since then gone on to spawn two full seasons on the CARTOON NETWORK. Seemingly a play off of such retro-cartoons as JONNY QUEST.... and... uhhhh... JONNY QUEST???? (I wasn't alive in the 60's or the 70's how the f*** should I know?) Anyways. THE VENTURE BROS seemingly playing off the aforementioned shows of old, but that is about as golden age as it gets, as if half of the situations or vulgar character interactions within this show were even eluded to in the 60's I am rather sure the FCCC (were they around in the 60's???) would have strung the creators up by their entrails. (Irony??? Si!) Yes, THE VENTURE BROS can easily be called a show that treads that thin line of what can be said and done on TV, much like that of THE SIMPSONS, SOUTH PARK and FAMILY GUY. It's funny I mention FAMILY GUY (or is it???) as both shows (FAMILY GUY and THE VENTURE BROS that is) share a common affirmative, and that is the voice talent of PATRICK WARBURTON (David Puddy... you know Elaine's boyfriend on SEINFELD???). PATRICK WARBURTON is easily one of the most recognizable voices out there, which of course has lead him to numerous jobs in the realm of animation, from theatrical releases to television series, his voice is seemingly always in demand!
So with all this in tow, and a tag line that reads "LOVE NEVER BLOWS UP AND GETS KILLED", M@ just had to get his hands on THE VENTURE BROS SEASON TWO which plopped itself out of the ADULT SWIM pool and onto DVD a few weeks back (ahh yeah!!! I am catching up, I can feel it!) The show stars the titular VENTURE BROS, DEAN and HANK... well I guess star is taking it a little too far as the real stars (at least in SEASON TWO) are DR VENTURE the boys pseudo mad scientist father.. creator.. uhhh... hatcher??? and his bodyguard BROCK SAMSON (voiced by PATRICK WARBURTON) and a plethora of societal miscreant bad guys who are all eerily familiar yet very unique. The best thing (and most scary) about THE VENTURE BROS SEASON TWO is that it is A-D-D-I-C-T-I-N-G! Once you put in the first disc, it is very easy to push everything else aside to maintain viewing. (Thanks, WARNER HOME VIDEO that really helped my marriage... Wait! Do they get half of everything??? Even DVD's??? SHIT!!!!! kidding!)

Bottom Line: All in all, THE VENTURE BROS SEASON TWO should definitely be on anyone’s list who fancy themselves a fan of shows like FAMILY GUY, SOUTH PARK, SPACE GHOST COAST TO COAST, HARVEY BIRDMAN ATTORNEY AT LAW, THE BRAK SHOW etc., or anyone who is looking to add a little bit of fun and absurdity to their days on earth in general. As for the rest... well... there are plenty of DISNEY titles out there (you just better get them before they lock them in that crazy vault of theirs!!!!) |
