Tom Peters has just moved to the small town of Jefferton, best known for its strip malls, buffet restaurants and run-down parks. Seeking to make a name for himself, Tom begins setting up meetings with the eccentric mayor of the town. Together, they develop a number of pointless ideas that never seem to go anywhere. Sometimes they seem to make things worse.

ADULT SWIM always pissed me off when I was a kid. Seriously, what the f*** do adults need their own swim time for??? They can swim in the overly chlorinated piss water with the rest. It's not like the kids get out of the pool and magically the water becomes less polluted with urine, nope that's not how it works at all.
Moving on, and my point originally the CARTOON NETWORK's ADULT SWIM is home for tons of quirky and rather odd animated series. One of those odd series being TOM GOES TO THE MAYOR which was recently released on DVD in a TOM GOES TO THE MAYOR: THE COMPLETE SERIES (BUSINESSMAN'S EDITION). That's right, all 30 episodes of this very original and offbeat animated series housed on three discs! The series which takes place in the town of JEFFERTON is definitely one of the more uniquely animated shows on the ADULT SWIM. As the artist seemingly use real life stills to create the animation (I am pretty sure it is all done in Photoshop, but that's just a guess), which gives way for some great and hilarious cameos from the likes of JACK BLACK and KYLE GASS as desperate bear trap shop owners, MICHAEL IAN BLACK as the homoerotic friend to the Mayor and PATTON OSWALD playing.. well... himself. Though the show does not center on its celebrity cameos, it focuses on exactly what the title says it does, a guy named TOM who is an entrepreneur who consistently has the MAYOR of JEFFERTON twisting his ideas towards the MAYOR's own fiendish goals, with hilarious consequences of course!
30 episodes may sound like a lot to stomach for those who don't know about the show, but with each episode clocking in at a little over ten minutes a piece, 30 episodes really equates to more like 10 for the normal animated series standard running time. Though with the episodes as short as they are, it definitely assures that the jokes are always fresh and the gags are never overly drug out.

Bottom Line: TOM GOES TO THE MAYOR: THE COMPLETE SERIES (BUSINESSMAN'S EDITION) will hit or miss given the crowd. Though with the crowd's it does hit, it will hit hard and hopefully spark more creative animation as this in the future! |
