First off just let me preface this review by saying to HBO VIDEO and the creators of DA ALI G SHOW. Look, it's great you want to make a satirical show making fun of current trends and fads. But when it comes time to release your DVD sets and you want people to talk about them or God forbid review them, let's keep the Ebonics to a minimal. As every time I type DA ALI G SHOW: THE COMPLEET SEREEZ I am in fear that the NAACP is going to bust into my apartment and chastise me for using the "Black Man's wordsake" or some shit. Now, I don't want to tell you how to do your jobs, but I also don't want to be MICHAEL RICHARDS either, and I am sure there is a happy medium for us both.
Moving on... ahem... DA ALI G SHOW: THE COMPLEET SEREEZ is not a new release to tell the truth, no it is just the 2004 and 2005 released DVD's of season one and season two packaged together in a box set that visibly and blatantly whores out BORAT. Yes, in the times before the BORAT film craze of late 2006 (in other words now) when these DVD's first saw the fluorescent lights of stores only ALI G graced the covers and BORAT saw only the fame of a small back frame to the same like of BRUNO (another of the SACHA BARON COHEN characters). So on this set they made sure to create a cover that would equally spotlight both the titular ALI G and the newly famed BORAT. Their answer is to do one of those two picture "spiff-O-graph" thingie, where from one angle it is ALI G but from the other *prest-O spiff-O* it's none other than BORAT. I guess they were thinking shoppers would be caught off guard as they walked by and first only saw ALI G but two steps later would see their favorite Kazakhstani reporter BORAT and would just have to buy it. Too bad for them this worked marvelously, and fans of the BORAT film ate right out of the palms of their hands!!!!
The first set or season as it falls on this set contains all 6 episodes from the first season of DA ALI G SHOW. The nice thing about the set up on the episodes is that you can either choose the "play all" function or you can pick and choose your favorite segments from each episode as they are all nicely labeled with which of SACHA BARON COHEN's characters is featured and to what extent. This is an especially nice feature for those who let's say only like two of the three COHEN characters, it makes skipping of the unfavorable come with much of ease (it's like BRUNO just doesn't even exist)!!! The interviews and segments from the first season are not always the most classic, as at times you can tell COHEN is still creating either ALI G, BORAT or BRUNO, but it still has some of the more classic moments of the series.
Season two of the dual season set, is set up as it's former with the concluding 6 episodes from the series. COHEN is definitely more comfortable in all of his forms, and seemingly because of he pushes the antics even further including and (no where near limited to) raunchier photos (i.e. BORAT and his "sister"), furthering misunderstanding the English language and culture to the point of total absurdity, and yes complete and total idiots who think they are actually talking to a real person, not just a fictitious character. Which all make for fun, enjoyable and hilarious viewing, which you will no doubt want to share with your friends.

Bottom Line: If you're TIVO has long since erased all of your DA ALI G SHOW episodes since it was on air or if you just picked up on it recently due to BORAT, DA ALI G SHOW: THE COMPLEET SEREEZ is definitely worth your time and money. Unfortunately for old school fans of the show who bought season one and two back in the day, to you my friends this set offers not a thing new than a box. |
